Solidarity actions to make way for the new normal

It will take a while for things to go back to normal in Madrid. So much so that people have started referring to the future as the “new normal”, as if implying like will never go back to being the way it was. And it certainly seems that is the way things are going to be for some time, and we, the city services, are all going to have to reinvent ourselves while we wait to see what the future holds.

Below are some actions that have been organised in recent weeks that have put a smile on many people’s faces:

  1. Yo te cocino (“I Will Cook for You”) A sort of social network that connects people who work from dawn to dusk with others who offer to share their meals within a 1 km radius. The delivery is performed without physical contact and respecting hygiene and safety measures. It is seamlessly organised, and the community keeps growing.
  2. Street heroes. This initiative by Ecoembes is aimed at those people who collect packages, glass and other waste items for recycling. To show their appreciation, people are writing thank-you messages on the bin bags for the people who collect them.
  3. Meditation, sports and yoga. So many people have taken their workshops online the offer is now astounding. From characters like Patry Jordan to small gym instructors, no one has missed this opportunity to summon their pupils to Instagram or YouTube.
  4. Volunteering midwives. Pregnancy during confinement is a great source of worry due to all the doubts and concerns it raises among the expecting mothers, especially now their preparation courses have stopped. Luckily, there are groups of midwives who are volunteering to keep these future mothers informed during these difficult times.
