Have you tried cross-country skiing?

Madrid has it all, even mountains a lot closer than you think. In Puerto de Navafría, located just over one hour away from the city, there are over 18 miles of ski slopes dedicated to classic skiing and cross-country skiing. In its Nordic Ski Centre you can rent skiing equipment as well as snow rackets to walk on the snow. On their website you can find updated information on the type of snow and access status to its slopes.

They also offer different courses for beginners and children as well as personalised activities for groups and individuals. Prices aren’t particularly expensive, with a basic pass costing just 10 euros or 23 if you rent equipment (boots and poles). The jackets you will have to bring for yourself.

To get here, you can come by car (60 miles from Madrid) or go to Lozoya by bus and take the Esquíbus, which will leave you directly at the resort. Here you can find all the information on opening hours and access but remember to make a booking at least 48 hours in advance.

Without leaving the region of Comunidad de Madrid (Navafría is in the Segovia province) you can find routes for cross-country skiing or for snow rackets (as well as other activities) at La Cantina de Cotos. You can check their cross-country skiing programme here combined with a walk with snow rackets, a true mountain activity which includes spending a night in a refuge with dinner and breakfast included for just 69 euros. The activity starts at sunset and comprises a 2-hour night walk with snow rackets climbing up to 2,000 metres (6,561 ft.) and contemplating the spectacular views of the Peñalara cirque glacier (even at night).

If you would rather not spend the night, there are also courses of a duration of 4 hours which cost 34 euros per person.
