Even though the saying is “the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain”, the rain in Madrid can be rather persistent and trying to walk around the capital with an umbrella can be unbearable at times.

So, with all the rainy days we’ve already seen this spring, and those that are probably yet to come over the next month or so, we’ve put together a series of ideas and activities that can be enjoyed even when it’s raining.

  1. Enjoy churros with chocolate in San Ginés. The most appealing activity for a rainy day. A hot chocolate to warm you up from the inside out. As well as San Ginés, you can also go to Chocolatería Valor, which is equally as delicious and located just 4 minutes’ walk away.
  2. Take the opportunity to visit an exhibition. The Museo del Prado, the Reina Sofía, the Thyssen and the Caixa Fórum are all virtually side by side. Choose the exhibition you want to visit or visit a few back to back.
  3. Take a tour of the Bernabéu Stadium. The trophy room, the changing room, the corridor the players walk down to the pitch… The Bernabéu tour is one of Madrid’s best tourist attractions and, apart from the pitch, it’s all indoors.
  4. Drink a coffee with cats. Imitating the Japanese establishments, there are also cat cafés in Madrid. La Gatoteca is located on Calle Argumosa, near to Atocha. It’s the ideal place for animal lovers.
  5. Spend an evening playing board games at one of the bars in Malasaña. And if the bar is full, you don’t even have to be very refined in your game choice.
  6. Go shopping in Plaza Río, the shopping centre on the other side of the Manzanares river. It’s also full of restaurants where you can stop for dinner.
