Comida mexicana, pica pero no quema

comida mexicanaFor everything we know, locals in Madrid are not huge fans of spicy food. You can see this every time someone orders some patatas bravas, whose bravery is a false declaration of intentions. Something similar happens with Mexican food, which doesn’t mean that one cannot enjoy the different specialities on offer.

A great Mexican restaurant is La Venganza de Malinche, on Calle de los Jardines, 5 (area Ópera Metro station), where they offer an interesting lunchtime menu for just over 10 euros. You will be full and satisfied with the different exquisite delicacies they serve, such as chimichanga, the enchiladas with green sauce, the Aztec soup or the irresistible beef or pork burritos. For dessert, sweet guava, for example, to top off a meal that is fantastic value for money. If you are lucky and there is no reggaeton in the background –although there most likely will be- you will leave more than happy.

You will also enjoy La Lupita, on the elegant Calle de Conde de Xiquena (metro Alonso Martínez), where they serve irresistible micheladas, a mix of local beer with lemon juice, salt and their secret ingredient. In terms of food, they serve delicious tacos, quesadillas and fajitas in a Mexican atmosphere that is not overwhelming or too folkloric, although the waiters will sing some Mexican songs with a guitar if you ask them to, making you feel like if you were in Plaza del Zócalo in Mexico City.

La Latina is a district where La Taquería del Alamillo (Plaza del Alamillo, 8) has enjoyed a considerable amount of popularity in recent years, an area of Madrid, the Habsburg district (Madrid de los Austrias) that reminisces of certain picturesque spots in Italy. We recommend its Pre Colombian stew, a type of fondue from which you can fill up your tortillas or guacamole. However, according to those in the know, one of the restaurant that most resembles authentic Mexican cuisine is La Herradura, on Calle Montserrat, 32 (area Noviciado metro station). It is not a designer restaurant and it doesn’t have particular charm, but the quality of its food makes up for the lack of décor.
